Prelude: An Artwork Born from Listening

Prelude, a cello inspired artwork by Sean Cottman

Some artworks begin with an image. Prelude began with sound.

While listening to a rendition of Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello No. 1, Sean Cottman found himself drawn into a feeling of calm, protection, fulfillment and peace. Those feelings became the starting point for Prelude.

At the heart of the work is the cello, surrounded by expressive lines, musical notes and warm passages of color. The composition carries the energy of music while holding on to a quieter feeling, the pause that comes when we stop to listen.

Prelude is a reminder that listening can be more important than speaking. In a busy room, it offers a moment of stillness. On a wall, desk or shelf, it brings the memory of music into the everyday.

The original Prelude is a 6 x 9 inch work on paper, is sold unframed. The piece is also available as a 24 x 16 inch limited edition print on archival fine art paper. Each limited edition print is numbered and includes a tamper proof holographic serial number to help confirm its authenticity.

For those who would like to bring Prelude into their space in a different scale, the open edition print is available in five sizes on archival fine art paper. It offers another way to live with the movement, warmth and quiet presence of the work, whether displayed as a small accent or as a larger statement on the wall.

Whether you are drawn to the original, the limited edition or the open edition print, Prelude was made to hold a feeling of calm, presence and reflection.
